Lakshmi's life story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative impact of fair trade employment. Born into the slums of Chennai, Lakshmi faced unimaginable hardships, but through her work with MADE FREE, she has found renewed hope and purpose.
A Childhood of Survival
Lakshmi's early life was marked by extreme poverty. Growing up in the slums of Chennai, her family's shack was located in a sewage flow, causing their home to flood with waste during the rainy season. With no option to escape the slum, Lakshmi, along with her four siblings and parents, worked tirelessly just to survive. Education was a luxury that Lakshmi could barely afford as she had to prioritize her family's immediate needs.
At the age of 16, tragedy struck when Lakshmi's father passed away. This loss placed even more burden on her shoulders as she became one of the primary providers for her family. Life was a daily struggle, and by the time she was 18, Lakshmi was married and had two children of her own. Her marriage, however, was far from a sanctuary. "I knew he already had a few other women in his life," she recalls. Her husband was abusive, and her days were filled with fear and pain, exacerbating the hardships she already faced.
When she was 23 years old, Lakshmi faced the immense challenge of caring for her children and her ailing mother after her husband passed away. Overwhelmed by the weight of these responsibilities, she felt trapped and saw no way out. "I thought there was no hope for us," she recalls, reflecting on a time when she was nearly consumed by despair—the crushing hopelessness that millions of people in poverty experience daily.
