Pooja's early years were marked by hardship. One of her most vivid memories is being locked in a 6' x 6' room for seven days while her parents visited relatives. She was only four years old at the time, and though she survived, that sense of abandonment and feeling unwanted has lingered throughout her life. As the second of five siblings, she soon became the sole income earner for her family.
Life in the Slum
Pooja grew up in a slum cluster just outside the city limits, surrounded by individuals affected by leprosy. After her father abandoned the family, her mother placed her in a small living area with strict rules. Despite these restrictions, Pooja persevered, determined to provide for her family and change her circumstances.
Finding a New Path
Pooja’s life took a positive turn when she connected with MADE FREE's first partner in India. This opportunity provided her with a supportive and nurturing environment, where she was influenced by strong mentors and guided by faith. Through this community, she not only found a way to support herself but also began to develop skills in administration, finance, and leather craftsmanship.

Building Skills and Independence
Today, Pooja is undergoing training to master high-level quality control, ensuring that every product she oversees meets the highest standards before being shipped to buyers. Her role has evolved significantly, and she has grown into a leader capable of managing workers and operations with precision.
Supporting Her Family and Community
Pooja's success is not just personal—she is actively working to lift her younger siblings out of the difficult circumstances she once endured. With her help, her younger sister and two brothers are beginning to find their way. Pooja is a role model, not just for her family but for many in her community who are facing similar challenges.
